Character NAME: Ken’ichi “Tenjou” Inari
Character PULL-POINT: A week after he proposed to Saori Nakagawa.
Character AGE: 127 (but looks physically 27)
Character ABILITIES: Tenjou, being classified as a god, has some of the basic abilities given to them: increased strength, minor regeneration and an insanely long lifespan. His "soul ability", or his soul’s innate talent, is vector manipulation. Basically he’s able to control the speed and direction of an object. He’s prefers to use his powers on inanimate objects so he’s stronger using it that way. As Inari, he has an affinity for foxes and is able to communicate with them.
Character HISTORY: In Ken-ichi’s world, all souls are subject to reincarnation when their spirit has lived out their current life span. Kuukan, the spiritual realm, is where they all converge while they await their next turn in the cycle. While the former living make up majority of the population of Kuukan, many supernatural creatures like demons and even gods reside here.
Ken’ichi was born to the Fourth Generation of Inari, the Shinto god of rice, agriculture, industry and worldly success among many things. His mother died due to birth complications and his father was often away due to work. Because the title of the gods isn’t strictly inherited, he was trained and groomed to be ready to take on the title with the possibilities of having multiple rivals to deal with in the future. Well, that was assuming he actually stayed at home instead of running out to the Second District where he often played with different spirits and creatures. He never enjoyed the idea of being next in line to his father.
Inari, as one of the most influential/active gods, began to notice a spike in Mononoke rouge beings who consume souls for the sake of power boosts like increased strength or extended life spans. When souls unattached to a physical body are consumed, they are permanently lost. This causes an imbalance between the population of souls in the living realm and Kuukan and souls cannot be easily replenished to recover from the loss. Ken’ichi’s father decided a corps should be made to take care of these Mononoke and to protect Kuukan from losing any more souls.
At this time, he took on his alias Tenjou for security reasons. His father decided joining the corps was what he needed to help discovering his calling. Over the years, Tenjou rose up in the ranks and even recruited some of new members. He also managed to develop and master his soul ability, an innate power all souls posses but often difficult to unlock.
Time is not a friend to even gods-in-training though. The corps has had their shares of victory and defeat. Another spike in the Mononoke population starts taking a toll on his morale. When he was 107 years old, in modern day Kyoto, he followed the trail of Nopperabou or a Faceless Mononoke who managed to spirit away a woman named Saori Nakagawa. The creature managed to separate her soul from her body when he arrived but Tenjou was too late. Her body was eaten but luckily he saved her soul.
Tenjou wasn’t given much of a choice and took Saori to her father’s place. Eventually it was decided she could stay in the Inari residence. Like any other soul, she would have to wait until her time to be reincarnated. Over the many years of waiting, Saori found out about the corps and decided to join despite his protests. To everyone’s surprise she managed to survive the training and became one of Tenjou’s closest allies.
The two kept bouncing between the lines of just partners and partners with benefits. It wasn’t until he was 127 years old and an encounter with a Nue mononoke who shapeshifted into himself and almost killed Saori. It was then he realized he couldn’t afford to lose her again. When he does finally defeat it, and gotten severely injured, he finally proposed to her. While he did get punched in the face at first, she said yes.
Character PERSONALITY:
Tenjou's life has been full of high expectations. As the son of the most influential gods and next in line, there was pressure to succeed and accept his inheritance. Over the years the lack of close father and son bonding accumulated into a inferiority complex. He has had moments where he doubted whether the loyalty of his fellow corps members was sincere or out of obligation. He often ran away from his classes growing up and is actually more used to going by his alias than his true name. He's never sure if he can fill in his father's shoes and be the change both Kuukan and the living realm needs.
Before he can even consider how he can pan out as a god, he needs to be honest with himself. While he did realize he did love Saori Nakagawa, he couldn't bring himself to propose right then and now, and it took him twenty years and almost losing her to ask the question. He didn't want to admit he was afraid of commitment, which is what he needed as both a god and a husband. Because of that he tried to keep a facade that he didn't care much about things when it was the opposite. At his current canon point he is slowly accepting that he got things wrong because of his mindset.
As mentioned earlier, he was becoming sour from dropping morale and it was Saori who changed that but she helped him to become a warmer person. It helped him to remember why he joined the corps. His first motive was to get away from the realm of the gods as a means of escapism. The more he did the job however and saw how much it changed both corps members and those he helped, he began to enjoy his job. Saori helped to respark that passion again. He is now devoted to protecting all souls in the realm and just a step closer to becoming the Fifth generation Inari.

The name's Tenjou. I'll skip the usual questions of where am I and stuff. Just tell me where I can find the son of a bitch who dragged me here. It's not something a mononoke could easily pull off alone. I don't have time to entertain them and have business elsewhere.
[There's a beat as a thought came to him.]

Tenjou could feel the crunch of the earth under his boots he took with each step he took. This new world he brought to, strangely enough started to become familiar. At times it reminded him of his home. Not the mansion in the first district of Kuukan, where only gods and their devoted servants lived, but the massive second district where he often ran to skip classes. There was some comfort knowing he wasn't the only stranded person here.
He was in no mood to train and spent the rest of the afternoon alone wandering about. Eventually he found himself on top of a flat roof of a building and he laid down on his back, looking up at the sky.
There was something he did miss deeply. Tea. It wasn't so much the type of tea but who made it. He looked at the silver band on his finger. Was it really a week since he saw her and asked that question?
"Just wait a little longer, Saori. I'll be back. I wasted enough time to ask what I should be asked a long time ago. "
